June 26, 2016 – For the letter U in our A-to-Z countdown to the 2016 Tour de France (#TDF2016) we’ve chosen Jan ULLRICH in this striking image from the prologue time trial of the 2003 edition that marked the Tour’s 100th anniversary.

Because of the historical significance, that Tour started in Paris—as did the 1963 Tour celebrating the 50th anniversary. Ullrich, Germany’s one and only Tour winner (in 1997). took fourth place in the 2003 Paris prologue and, after a race-long duel with his American nemesis, Lance Armstrong, he finished back in Paris on the second step of the podium. Besides his single overall victory, Ullrich placed second five times and also took one third place. [WORDS: JOHN WILCOCKSON; IMAGE: YUZURU SUNADA]
