Aug 23, 2016 – Wednesday’s stage 5 of the 2016 Vuelta heads east along the northern Atlantic coast of Spain before looping inland to a finish in Lugo. When the Vuelta a España last staged a finish here, in 2006, Kazakhstan’s Alexander Vinokourov escaped in the final kilometers to score a solo win, one second ahead of a sprinting peloton led in by Italian Ruggero Marzoli (at left in this image).

Lugo, a city of 100,000 population, is one of the rare cities to boast a still-intact Roman-built city wall. It’s 1,800 years old, 2 kilometers around and features 71 round towers some 50 feet tall. It was recognized in 2000 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This week’s Vuelta stage could end in mass finish, because it gives the sprinters one of their rare chances of contesting the win—though a short hill 2 kilometers from the line gives a rider such as Belgian champion Philippe Gilbert a good chance of victory.
