La Doyenne (“The Old Lady”) has been run since 1892 and dominated by the Belgians who have won 59 editions (Philippe Gilbert was the last Belgian to win in 2011). The race did not run during the years 1895-1907, 1910, 1914-1918, 1940-1942, and 1944. The clear favorite for the 2016 running is Spaniard, Alejandro Valverde who has won the race on three occasions (2006, 2008, 2015). If Valverde wins, he will join Italian, Moreno Argentin (1985, 1986, 1987, 1991) in the four-win category. Only Eddy Merckx has won more (1969, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975).

Here’s a look through the years and through the lens of photographer Yuzuru Sunada.
