The American, who last year stunned many with his victory in the Tour of Spain at the age of 41, joined Lampre in January but suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung when he was hit by a car on a training ride in April. He recovered sufficiently to compete in the Tour de France where he finished 17th in the overall standings.
