May 21, 2014 (AFP) – Australian rider Michael Matthews has pulled out of the Tour of Italy before Wednesday’s 11th stage, his Orica team announced. The 23-year-old, who wore the leader’s pink jersey for six days, suffered a right thigh injury in a fall on Sunday. Despite that misfortune Matthews, who won the sixth stage, went on to take third in Tuesday’s 10th stage.

“Michael fought to get a result despite the pain,” Orica said. “What’s certain is he’s learnt a lot from this Giro.”
