H is For Hinault: A Dedicated Fan

June 13, 2016 – For the letter H in our A-to-Z countdown to the 2016 Tour de France (#TDF2016) we’ve chosen Bernard HINAULT—or in this image from the 2004 Tour, a dedicated fan of the five-time Tour champion.

The fan is, like Hinault, clearly a farmer, having used half a dozen round straw bales to make up his tableau on the course of the seventh stage of that year’s Tour on its way into his hero’s hometown of Saint-Brieuc.

Beneath the black-and-white flag of Free Brittany, their home province, and the smaller blue-white-and-red French national flag, the fan has placed a blue-and-white race jersey from Hinault’s early career and the more famous Mondrian design of La Vie Claire—the French team with which he won his final Tour in 1986. And maybe there was a badger hiding in the straw….
