During the 1997 Tour, when the race was at Rouen, a ceremony was held at Jacques Anquetil’s grave to mark the 10th anniversary of hid death. Anquetil won the Tour on his debut in 1957 and then took it four years in succession from 1961–64.
Honoring the French champion at the 1997 ceremony were the later five-time winners (from left): Bernard Hinault of France (whose five Tour wins came between 1978 and 1985), Eddy Merckx of Belgium (between 1969 and 1974) and Miguel Induráin of Spain (1991–95). Anquetil was age 53 when he died from stomach cancer in November 1987.
