Spinergy has created many iconic wheels in its day. And though the Southern California company’s designers and engineers have brought the wheels back to a more traditional look recently, the brand still brings fresh designs and innovation to the table. Spinergy’s latest wheelset, the GXX, sits atop its gravel range and takes aim at serious mixedterrain riding.

One of the major things that stands out about the GXX is the use of Spinergy’s patented PBO composite spokes. Each of these spokes, 24 front and rear, is made from more than 30,000 strands of polyphenylene bensobisoxazole fiber, providing three times the strength of stainless steel at half the weight. That’s an impressive strength-to-weight ratio that helps keep the total weight down to 1,590 grams for the set. But beyond the weight the biggest benefit of these advanced spokes is their ride quality. Although the PBO spokes feature throughout the Spinergy wheel line, they are perhaps best suited for gravel riding. They absorb the constant buzz of gravel roads, as well as bigger impacts from unexpected ruts or potholes, letting you ride for longer with less fatigue. Spinergy also says these strong spokes hold their own better against big bumps, staying in true for longer. And if you do need to true them, Spinergy includes a spoke wrench with the set.

Of course, these wheels are more than just spokes. They feature a brand-new, 26mm-deep carbon-rim design that’s up to the demands of gravel. With a 24mm-wide internal width, these rims are purpose built to handle high-volume tires, from the gravel sweet spot of 40mm to well beyond into the 50mm-and-up range. For additional strength, Spinergy has included a foam core in the rims, which has the added benefit of preventing water from entering the rim, so you should feel free to tackle any terrain that comes your way, even creek crossings. Plus, these wheels are tubeless ready, so you can run lower pressures for added vibration absorption.

Spinergy laces the rims to CNC-machined hubs rolling on sealed-cartridge bearings. The whole package comes in at $999, making this an enticing wheelset for those looking to upgrade their stock gravel wheels. And thanks to 11 different spoke-color options—from black to pink, along with custom colors—this is also a wheelset for those who want to stand out from the pack and show some individuality.

No thousand-dollar wheelset is going to be phenomenal at everything, but with the GXX Spinergy has done a great job at nailing the tradeoffs between ride quality, weight and price. The 24mm internal rim width make this a true gravel wheelset that gets the most out of large-volume tires. And the PBO spokes are right at home on gravel terrain, smoothing out the ride and leaving you fresher for longer. As a whole, the wheels feel strongly built, staying perfectly in true even after hitting plenty of large bumps. If you’re still riding the entry level wheels on your gravel bike, this set would be a welcome upgrade.
