EDDY MERCKX 2.0: Since the takeover of the Eddy Merckx brand, we haven’t heard much about the new direction that Belgian Cycling Factory will take. What we do know is the new versions of the EM525 and San Remo 76 are here, with more innovation coming with the 2020 line. “From the start it was already quite clear that launching real technical innovations so soon would be impossible,” says CEO Jochim Aerts. “Make no mistake though, next year we will be launching a brand new model. A first model where Belgian Cycling Factory know-how will be linked to the original Eddy Merckx heritage.”

For now, the brand has a new font and logo and the aforementioned redesigns on the EM525 and San Remo 76. It’s more organic, more of an embrace of Eddy’s great legacy than an attempt to convey an angular, technical vibe. For those with cycling knowledge that harkens back a few decades the new logo won’t be so ‘new’. It’s similar to the original Eddy Merckx logos, and almost identical to the logo used during the ’80’s on Eddy’s steel bikes like the gorgeous Corsa Extra with Columbus SLX tubing. It’s no surprise that Jochim Aerts is putting his own stamp on the brand, which also connects it to a glorious past. Jochim is Belgian, and founded Ridley bikes out of a frame painting business. This new Eddy Merckx connects a lot of those dots. When new models launch you can be sure they will get a big helping of Jochim’s carbon know-how as well.
