Peloton Week in Tech: October 3-7

Another week in the books here at the Peloton Service Course. We took a look at a few brands branching out with new product types, including pedals from Edco and tools from Feedback Sports.  We also saw a couple brands sticking to what they do best, Mavic’s new Ksyrium wheelset, and Sidi’s new Shot Shoe.  Incase you need an excuse to use all this tech, Matt Holden gives us some insight to an event that lets amateurs feel like a stage racing pro.

We looked at how Edco wants to improve pedal strokes with the 3ax Pedal

The laboratory testing done by Edco observed 17% less lateral knee movement, which results in more even foot pressure distribution and ultimately more comfort.  It is not just the endurance rider they are targeting either, the laboratory testing also claims efficiency improvements of up to 5.47%.  It’s not quite clear what kind of gains 5.47% efficiency improvements translates into, but no matter what the subject is; watts, aero, grams, 5+% increase out of one item is, potentially, monumental.

Mavic’s First Full Carbon Ksyrium

Mavic certainly took its sweet time delivering the Ksyrium Pro Carbon SL C, but used that time wisely. Carbon rims are not new to Mavic—the Cosmic line had some of the earliest carbon wheels on the market—but as advanced as those materials were, the rim widths were very traditional and very narrow. When it came to clinchers, Mavic was still using alloy rim beds, which made the wheels much heavier than the competition. The new Ksyrium Pro Carbon SLs are not only wide, they are full carbon.

Our Midweek Goods From The Peloton Service Course

When Feedback Sports entered the tool market, their goal was to do more than just make high quality tools. They took a no nonsense approach and came up with some simple solutions that can be appreciated by both home mechanics and professional mechanics alike. Their Team Edition Tool Kit features 19 of the more commonly used tools, purposely omitting some of the more obscure tools that seem to bloat other kits while waiting for that once in a blue moon use.

Italian helmet maker Kask has the distinction of being worn by the best of the best in the pro peloton in recent years.  This year they are entering the sunglass game to match their already reputable helmets.  Branded under its own name, KOO, the OPEN sunglasses offer a myriad of adjustability.  The arms have three settings which adjust the angle the lens sits on your face, swing that same adjustment point 180 degrees and the arms fold up flush with the frame for easy storage in a jersey pocket.

This summer Sidi teased us with five short videos giving us a glimpse of their new shoe, the Sidi Shot.  Even more of a tease was seeing none other than Chris Froome wearing them at the Tour.  Luckily for us the fall bike show season has given us more of a look at how Sidi, the name synonyms with high end shoes, has improved on their prodigious footwear.

Five Minutes With: Matt Holden – Haute Route

‘Haute Route’ means high road, and that is no empty brand name when it comes to the Haute Route series of events in Europe. These multi-day, timed events were created to celebrate the great mountain ranges of Europe – the Alps, the Dolomites, the Pyrenees – and offer what just might be the ultimate challenge for the amateur cyclist. Think of it as seven of the toughest gran fondos imaginable, back-to-back-to-back. For 2017, June 24-30th, Haute Route is coming to the US.
