JESI, Italy — Biniam Girmay made history (a phrase that will certainly be typed many more times in the years to come) today at the Giro d’Italia, becoming the first Eritrean rider, and first Black African, to win a stage in any grand tour, on stage 10 of the Giro d’Italia. The 22-year-old Intermarché–Wanty–Gobert Matériaux rider battled with Mathieu van der Poel in a reduced bunch sprint, ultimately outlasting the Dutchman who ran out of gas short of the line, a reversal of fortunes from stage 1 where Van der Poel beat out Girmay. Juan Pedro López retained his overall lead.
