The racing heated up early in Sunday’s Gent-Wevelgem, as crosswinds broke the peloton apart with 170 kilometers remaining in the 254-kilometer classic. A lead group of 25 riders formed, which would pare down to an elite selection of seven throughout the remainder of the race as it criss-crossed the cobbled bergs of Flanders. Jumbo-Visma found themselves with a numerical advantage, with both favorite Wout van Aert and Nathan van Hooydonk in the lead group, allowing them to both put in attacks to shed riders—including sprinter Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) who would have certainly been the favorite had he made it to the line with the lead group—and mark any attacks. Van Hooydonk lead out the final kilometer, allowing van Aert to beat out Giacomo Nizzolo (Qhubeka-ASSOS) and Matteo Trentin (UAE-Team Emirates) and add another win to his impressive palmarès.
