July 12th, 2016 – The Tour de France rolled out of the Pyrénées Mountains today after the race’s first rest day in the Principality of Andorra. Historically the Pyrénées always play a central role in the Tour de France. The race first came here in 1911, even before it ventured into the Alps and it offers steeper climbs that often provide excitement.

This year it was not the climbs, but the descent into Bagnières-de-Luchon that produced the biggest surprise, as defending champion Chris Froome gave his competitors a lesson in descending as he raced into the yellow jersey.

Torrential downpours mixed with flash flooding on the following stage into Andorra, however, virtually neutralized the race among the favorites. As the race left the Pyrénées on Tuesday, it remains locked in a close battle heading towards Mont Ventoux on stage 12, followed by the Tour’s first time trial the next day.
